My partner's older BMW X3 just suddenly stopped going into reverse. Forward worked, but the transmission refused to engage when put in reverse. We had it towed to Euro Motorcars and they warned her that it was probably a total loss since a new transmission plus labor would cost more than the car is worth, and even if they could find a salvage transmission, the parts and labor coupled with the diminished value of having a salvage transmission in it would zero out the value of the car. But these guys weren't going to let it go at that. They wanted to solve the puzzle.
They did some research and found out that in this car's age range, they were putting GM transmissions in the U.S. made X3's and they had some shoddy parts that break. So the guy offered her a deal. He would pull it apart and if he found the weak part had broken, he would replace it for a price we considered very reasonable, and if he couldn't fix it he would just charge her a few hundred dollars for the time, and would help her sell the car for salvage.
He found the broken part. Replaced it. Runs great. Considerably less than $2,000 for a transmission failure. We're never going anywhere else in S.F. for any German car service or repair!
